(An email to some friends of mine) Thank You
01.03.06 (7:19 pm)   [edit]
.... from the bottom of my heart.  Your warm presence and your hearty phone calls made it a truly memorable night.  Thank dlong, lion and fion for organizing.  Thank you all for your gifts.  They are lovely!  And we drank the merlot already last night (wearing the goggles).  Looking forward to continuing to share sorrows and laughters, teases and heart-to-heart conversations, noise and silence, passion and compassion, seriousness and craziness AND music and dance with all of you. Thank you thank you thank you.  Merci beaucoup!!!  May we all have a blessed and spirited 2006 and live a purpose-driven life!

While we are celebrating, don't forget the unfortunate ones on the streets and around the world... On the christmas day walking out of the theater in downtown, I saw lots of homeless men.  I smiled and said merry xmas to them but we can do more.... I am thinking maybe next year (well, this year) we can make some gifts/food for them and talk to them about Jesus and genuinely care for them.  Next up we can do it in Easter, followed by july fourth, Thanksgiving and xmas.  Maybe we can count down with them (homeless, hospital patients, prison innates, etc...too.)  Maybe Fion can head up our innates ministry since she has the experience in that ministry.

Doesn't need to be fancy.  Even cookies and candy bar could do, along with our smiles and care.  Singing and dancing.  I know I will forget.... and we will forget.  If we can bring it up regularly in our small groups, that would be great.  Let's make it happen!

Hey, that's my new year resolution #4 but is publicly monitored.  Please monitor me... and us.

Eugene, can you write it down and monitor our progress?

That's how my mind works, random ideas pop up...maybe somehow the spirit touches my heart while i am writing this.

hmmm...PICTURE the poor and needy being COLD on the streets while we are very WARM inside the houses.  TOUCHING one more person is better than NOTHING. =)

STOP reading this email and PRAY about it NOW!  (even for 32 seconds)

Jimmy

Less than 30 hours to go...
12.30.05 (6:46 pm)   [edit]

before 2005 silently fades away.  Looking back, I am grateful for this fruitful year, signified by a few milestones:

Moved to Kirkland

After seven plus years in Lynnwood and seven years of thinking and talking and thinking and talking and thinking about moving, I finally moved.  I like my house.  As my chemistry prompts me to go out a lot, I haven't spent enough time there though.

My first screenplay

"Triple shot Journey" (working title) is the first screenplay I started.  Wrote mostly in Zoka, Starbucks and other office-like environment.  30 pages down, 70 more to go.  Interrupted by the "Grand Move" in the summer.  My REAL COMPLETED SCREENPLAY "Memories" was written based on the above feature screenplay and I ended up changing the story entirely.  It's a 10-12 minute short film.

My first filmmaking experience

Aside from the various class filmmaking projects this year, I actually shot some scenes from my script "Memories" and edited the train platform sequence.  Thank all my friends for helping me in a last minute call.... on a Thanksgiving Day.  I'll rewrite the script, storyboard and film the real version next spring.

I Love My Job

...for the first time in my life!  Good company, nice projects and great boss!  ....although I have to stay late quite a bit.

I feel focused ...

despite constantly distracted by zillion things and people.  At least I don't have internet access or TV signal at home to distract me.  I am thankful.

Great friends

While this is not exactly a milestone, I love my friends.

Double Black

My first double black experience after two years of abstinence from skiing.  I actually improved.

Okay, I pray that I continue to grow in the nouveau year of 20 06... and maybe I'll ...

Cheers!

FADE IN:

int. apartment – night

In an apartment, we see a few paintings and drawing hanging on the wall.  One of them is “Man feeding geese by the lake”.  On the wall, there are also pictures of different people with names under each picture.  We see “cousin Jack”, “best friend Sabrina”, and “Grandma”, etc.

A naturally elegant, beautiful young woman in her 20s, BELLE takes out a book from her bag.  She goes to her bed and starts flipping through the first few pages.

belle

Ah, it’s a journal.  Hmm.. must have his name somewhere…

Belle goes on flipping through the journal in order to find his contact information.

She is intrigued by a loose page of poem “touch” falling out of the journal.

Long Time No Write!
09.09.05 (3:15 pm)   [edit]
Almost forgot I have a blog.  I guess I have been enjoying Seattle a bit too much.  You can't NOT go out here in the summer.  Perfect blue sky meets the green peace...  Being an H2O addict, I have to see a large body of water everyday, either crossing the lake or rollerblading around green lake or swimming at the Madison Park.

Purpose Driven Life: Day 1
10.07.04 (3:45 pm)   [edit]

I bought the book right after my birthday this year but haven't read a page for nine months.  (Thanks to the BN gift card from my small group, I got to buy the biographies from Freud and Jung, a great coffee table book on skyscrapers, pocket books of Architecture and Renaissance, along with Purpose Driven Life.  All with deep discounts.) Not that I was that busy.  I've probably read more than 30 books this year.  Somehow, it's been sitting on the shelf.  Admittedly, I tend to get caught up by thousands of articles from the web and magazines or finish up the books from the library first, before touching my bookshelf.

After talking with my mom about my mission trip and her year-round mission trip in HK (my mom is a gifted personal evangelist, helping others and witnessing for Christ is her life!) on Tuesday, I picked up the bible again, read the end of Samuel I where I left off since the mission trip.  Suddenly, I had an urge to read Purpose Driven Life, so here we are!

This is not a self-help book.  Instead of inward-looking, we look outward to God.

What is the purpose of my life?

It's not about me. It's all about God and what He wants each of us to do on earth.

Verse: Everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him." Colossians: 1:16b.

Question to consider: In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really living for God, not myself?

Back home!
09.29.04 (8:19 pm)   [edit]

After 24 days of mission trip and leisure traveling, I am back home, to this lushy Seattle.

Good to be back.

When I have enough energy, I will pick up where I left off from Day 4.  But for now, let me put myself back together.

Day 4: English Classes and Gypsies in Chotebor, CZ
09.07.04 (12:50 pm)   [edit]

Hello brothers and sisters,

Today was the longest and busiest day so far on the trip. We left our camp at 8am and it lasted till well after 10pm.

Exhausted but meaningful!

We went to four english classes in a business high school at Chotebor. Basically, we started with introducing Seattle in the beginning of the class, places and things like Space Needle, Mount Rainier, Starbucks, etc., with illustrations. Then we took questions from them. The students didn't ask a lot of questions in front of the class. One notable question in the afternoon class was raised by a curious guy who said, "You guys are from America, but you look more like tourists from Japan or somewhere...." We explained that america is a land of immigrants and that there are many different ethnicities which make up this nation, not only caucasians.

That guy later actually became our friend and came back to a night class to learn more about the christian faith.

After the Q and A session in each class, we had small group conversation with the students. We learned about culture and personal

hobbies and interests with one another and found a point to break in and share the gospel or simply gauge where they stand in terms of faith or worldview. Basically, most of them may have heard of God but are atheist. Still we could have apologelic talks or simply share our testimonies.

After the afternoon class, we went to a playground to play with the Gypsy kids. They were wild and innocent. We love the kids and they love us, especially after seeing the instant playback from our digital camera, they went crazy! We had a skit, games and ballgames with them. Some of us had a chance to talk to some of their parents too, throught translation.

We had an evening class before enjoying our "fruitful" dinner. It's fruitful because we shared our faith and love of God!

Goodnight from Dlouhy!

in Christ,

Day 3: Refugee Camp
09.06.04 (11:51 am)   [edit]

Good evening from Dlouhy!

Hallelujah! What a wonderful and meaningful day!

After breakfast, we had 45 min of personal quiet time.  I went to the pond side and started to quiet down.  I could feel the light breeze and I was totaled immersed in the colorful creation by God.  Today I read Psalm 78, which reminds me of the grace and blessings we have from God everyday.  Without a constant thankful heart, we would be whining about little stuffs or bumps on the road.  After the scripture, I had the sweetest devotion in months with God.  I held out my hands to let God fill my cups with his blessings.

After the devotion, we shared about our devotions from our hearts.  We laughed, we cried, and we encourage each others with God's words.

Christer, European Director of Christian Outreach International, gave an eloquent talk on how to share our testimony.  What happen if we hesitate or fear about moving forwrd? the answer is: JUST DO IT!

In the afternoon, we went to a refugee camp.  It was one of the most rewarding experience in my life!  We played soccer with the kids (though I am a lousy ballplayer) We talked to a few people from Chechen in Russia.  They fled from the civil war in which Chechens are fighting for independence.  We asked them for what they would like us to pray.  "The war will be over soon!" They replied, through a translator.  Everyone there is desparately waiting for the Czech government to grant their right of abode or that some country will take them.  Their future looks like an endless tunnel.  Willis saw two guys standing alone and we approached to talk to them.  One is from Chechen.  Antoni, the other man, is from Kyrgyzstan.  They have lived in Czech Republic for more than a year.  We offered to pray for them that their family got approved to stay there and that at least his daughter could stay in Czech to study.  Then we prayed together with Antoni.  When we were about to leave, we found out from the translator that Antoni was going to court tomorrow for a second hearing of their refugee status.  Their family've been rejected once before.  Antoni was afraid that if they are rejected again, they would be sent be to Kyrgyzstan, where his life might be in danger.  Please pray for Antoni's family, their future and safety.  May one day that they would know Christ.  Thanks God that their daughter seems to be a Christian.

Visiting the refugee camp really put things into perspective.  When we were in HK, we might be indifferent to those boat people or refugees.  Now when we see if firsthand, I feel very sad every family that has to flee from their home country to a place where people may not want them.  A piece of paper (their asylum application) could determine the fate of a family.  T

Day 2
09.05.04 (11:22 am)   [edit]

It's Day 2!

I am very sleepy but would like to drop a few words to you guys. Bear with my flat tone. =)

Today we woke up early to head to a place an hour from our mission camp -- it's a town called Prelouc.  The sunday services was held in a prep-school.  It was a big meeting for them as normally they only have five to ten people.  We started with praise time with songs that are familiar to our team and to the Czech folks.  Amazingly lots of hymns were translated into Czech, just like they were translated into Chinese.  Jason from Texas and Annie from our team shared their testimonies with them.  Sol and Stu shared some songs with them.  Afterwards, Peter from that local church shared a brief message with us.  He used a parable to describe how a once very promising planted church somehow withered into a small crowd with a few people left and asked us to pray for their church.

We had lunch with them, chatting about Czech, Seattle, Food, Films, Sports and Politics....Nice conversation.  Like many Europeans, they are well read.
Oh, Fion and Lion arrived safely, just in time to join us for lunch.

In the afternoon we went to a school in Pardibice, a city with a 100,000 population but less than 1000 christians.  It's training time!  We learned a few Czech words and customs.  We learned that Czech were dominantly atheists.  Communist rule for forty some years may  The teachers there shared how their presence became a conduit for sowing seeds and harvasting for God.  We ended with a prayer time for the ministries, the teachers and students, and the City of Pardibice.

At the end of the day, we toured a castle a few kilometers from Pardibice and got a birdeye view of the city from afar.

Tomorrow we are going to visit the refugee camp.

Good night from Dlouhy, Czech Republic.

Czech Mission Dinner and Servant Auction
08.17.04 (2:27 pm)   [edit]
Last saturday night, we had our Czech Mission Fundraising Dinner.  It's the first time that every team member shows up!  Donna and Shari were the organzers of this big dinner.  Ray was our executive chef, teaching some of us how to cook prime rib in our own ovens!  I didn't get to cook it but some other members did.  Anthony, Donna and Shari spent the whole day preparing for the desserts as well as ribs.  We arrived a bit early to set up the tables.  Sol, Stu and some other folks were already there rehearsing for the praise songs.

Servant auction was the highlight of the night.  Each of us put down what could we offer and the dinner guests got to bid for our services.  Donny was our funny auctioneer.  He imitated how a traditional auctioneer sounds in his own hilarious way!  We received an average bid of $150 per person!  Nelson got bidded for $280.....maybe because of his weight?! Haha!!! Seriously, nelson is a big macho guy!

By the time the team members from the chinese congregation went up for auctions, most people were gone and only a few tables were left.  Then came my turn and I was a bit nervous as I didn't have much to offer.  I am glad our sweet team member Joanna offered herself for bid too.  So, it's BUY ONE GET ONE FREE.  My small group, represented by David Long and Eugene, was anxiously bidding my service but they faced a fierce bidding war from an anonymous bidder.  Finally, the anonymous bidder won the bid...for offering $160 or something.  Who was this bidder?  She's Maria Tang from the English Congregation.  She also helped out for the short term missions.

Now, she could own me for 4 to 6 hours.

The next day, my master exercised her right and we were heading to Ikea to load up some bookshelfs and stuffs.  Ikea was really big.  I didn't notice that before.  Maria mentioned that her friend in Edmonton liked to go to Ikea for her daily workout.  You know, it's a three-mile indoor walking trail in a snow-capped city.

The furnitures were heavy, but not as heavy as I expected.  After the moving, I went straight to a softball game organized by our MLB commissioner Peter Lau!  It's my second or third softball game and it was a blast!!!! (Although I could only hit infield singles!)  Oh, I forgot to mention that, despite our maximum caution, we still had two lady victims in the game.  One got hit by a ball and another got head-on hit.  Should I disclose their names?   Actually, they are excellent athletes and will compete in Beijing 2008!  =)

Writing in Sanity
08.05.04 (1:50 pm)   [edit]
Where is my sanity?
Down in the bottle
Soaked in soda or beer
Taking a summer break
indeed.

N'sync, N'sync, insane
My tank is out of gas
Insanity is an excuse
I killed the whole school
Insanity is something to blame

Where's my sanity?
It's working for you
behind the curtain

(For sane poems, they are just a few posts down, keep scrolling.....)

Comfort
08.05.04 (10:22 am)   [edit]
Comfort never comes easy
Just when you immerse in
this soothing paradise
It quietly slips away

Giving comfort is easier
Make someone comfortable
while you can
before you become
uncomfortable

My Poems
07.28.04 (12:30 pm)   [edit]
I've decided to re-post the poems I wrote in June and July in a sequence (eg. Random was my first poem, Touch my second..... except From Alki to Zoka, which I found it interesting to lead off the mania.)

Let me know which poem you like the best and why by leaving a comment.

Enjoy!

From Alki to Zoka
07.28.04 (12:24 pm)   [edit]
(A summer poem flirting with A to Z)

April to August
Behold the spring and summer
Cold drinks
Delightful jazz
Encores after encores

Fancy the sun?
Get out to the Greens
Hop on a bike
Inching towards the ocean
Joyous breeze
Kites flying
Lovers kissing
Mondays become an old tale

Nowhere like this
One little earth
Playfully crafting four seasons
Quenching the thirst for variety
Refreshing your life

Spring and summer
Twin sisters
Unwinding the busy you
Voulez-vous dancer?
Wild yet wise,
Xenon singing with radon
Youthful mood resembling
Zephyr on the zenith

Random
07.28.04 (12:22 pm)   [edit]
What happened…. was totally random
No plans, plots or any signs
Not even a raindrop from the sky
Nothing

You tried to explain it, yelling at the valleys.
Yet do you hear the echoes? or mourning from the sea?
Silence were near, slowly approaching without footprints.
The colors faded away, crippling with fainted minds
Hollowed, together they made a perfect symphony.

Walking on the busy street, you searched for an answer
Maybe you’ll run into some strangers, random encounters
In their stories, you looked for clues.
Why not just drink some sympathies,
waking up drunkenly with apathies?

Engulfed by the emptiness, you questioned your existence.
You turned on the radio.
Jazz or metal, news or commercial?
Does it matter? You left before you knew it.
Maybe you’ll run into you someday.

What happened… was totally random
No traits, residues or aftermaths
Not even a dust.
Nothing

Touch
07.28.04 (12:21 pm)   [edit]
Poor or rich?
You tell me.
All I hear is silence.
No, I hear nothing but your smiles.
Slowly transcending into the void
I hold my breath.
What I see is beyond ____________

Odorless, the thing smells like water
And tastes like air
The rest is redundant

Picture it while you are walking down
this infinite corridor.
What do you see?
Spices after spices,
the flavors were history.

I keep chewing it into my imagination
Swimming out of the painful reality
The truth is
Nobody knows…
But every soul dives in
Until …. draught

Portland
07.28.04 (12:18 pm)   [edit]
I arrived at the Port
Land of opportunities
Neat streets, nice people
Cars flowing, birds flying, but
where am I going?
Pick a pedestrian
Ask for directions
Hope for some revelations
Turn left, walk three blocks,
you'll see...

Take the streetcar,
get off at Everett
Jimmy Mak's on your right
Hop on the bus
a paradise for writers
Poems after poems
Trivial is the destination

Up and coming artsy Alberta
Sabbath on Monday night
Quiet but colorful
Coffee tea house at the corner
Beautiful Gymsy Jazz
down to earth musicians
Thirst quenched
Temper cooled
Aggressiveness softened
Tune gradually faded out
Reality kicked in
And I headed to Belmont

For food.
